George Fox Evangelical Seminary is a multi-denominational, evangelical, university-based seminary committed to equipping women and men academically, spiritually, emotionally, and theologically for ministry in the church and world. We are located in Portland, Oregon. We offer the opportunity to attend class one day per week on a full- or part-time basis or as a part of an Online Learning Community (OLC) for those interested in distance learning. Whether on campus or online, our faculty and staff create an environment where students are educated, trained, and mentored for leadership service.

The curriculum includes a Master of Divinity degree program, the foundational degree for pastoral ministry, and master’s degrees in Ministry Leadership and in Spiritual Formation, delivered either locally or in an online learning community. The MA in Theological Studies degree, with emphases in Bible, Christian history and theology, or Christian Earthkeeping, continues to serve those called to teaching or eventual doctoral study. The Doctor of Ministry degree, for experienced pastors who hold the MDiv or its equivalent, is a cohort-style online program with three tracks: Leadership and Spiritual Formation, Semiotics and Future Studies, and Global Missional Leadership.

George Fox Seminary faculty members come from a variety of evangelical backgrounds. They are pastors, church planters and missional leaders and share a common commitment to sound scholarship, warmhearted personal faith, and effective pastoral practice that continues to characterize the seminary’s approach to theological education.

The Association of Theological Schools granted the seminary full accreditation in 1974. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities also certifies the seminary’s programs. This dual accreditation is maintained now through George Fox University and assures students of the highest academic and professional standards.

  1. I can honestly say the greatest period of growth I have ever experienced in my life was during, and a direct result of, attending GF. It was not necessarily easy: my commute was over two hours, I had a wife, kids, a job, a ministry, and I was often challenged (in a healthy way) mentally and spiritually. However, I would not change a single thing. The relationships I built will last a lifetime. In addition, utilizing their internship program, I was able to land an internship that aided in my current employment. The experience was incredible and I would not hesitate to recommend GF.

  2. I graduated with a Doctor of Ministry degree from George Fox University. What I will remember most and what was so greatly appreciated was getting to know Chuck Conniry who is the dean there. Chuck loves Jesus and that is so contagious and so impacted my life as a student. Chuck is very thoughtful and balanced theologically in his approach to Scripture (which was very important to me as a student). Loren Kerns on faculty there was also extremely fun to work with and helped tremendously in the dissertation writing process. What was also great about the D.Min experience was also getting to know other students in the cohort model for long-distance learning together. You truly did get to know other students in the set-up of on-line and in person times together.

So the D.Min part of the seminary is one I would recommend to others – thanks to Chuck and Loren who led it so well and designed a great D.Min program.

  3. There is no better word to express my deepest gratitude to GF seminary. The first two intensives with Chuck, Marykate, Dan, Leonard, Loren, and Dave, have brought spiritual transformation into my life. The course is about the heart(emotion, soul shaping), the head(knowledge, and mind shaping), and the hand(ministry, and leadership formation). I am welcome, loved, and taught with their best heart, rich experience, and deep mind. Though I have not finished my dissertation yet, I will get it done because of what they invested in me, believed in me, and loved me. One of the best and rare opportunity to spend my life with these humble, and yet deep people.

  4. The D. Min. program at George Fox Seminary is doable for people all over the world because it mixed online interactions with an intensive 10-day face-to-face encounter each semester. I am so glad that I found this program and am loving it. To those who are thinking about this program, come join us on the journey.

  5. for years, years i tell you – i have tried, and tried, and tried to write a book. i must have started hundreds of times and each time never got past the introduction – GF changed that.

as i started the dmin process i was excited about the classes, the people in the classes and hanging with len – GF exceeded my wildest expectations and allowed me to give a deeper voice and the ability to put that voice to paper –

  6. I’m a student in the D.Min. in Global Missional Leadership and the program is top-notch. Academically challenging with immediate real-world applicability. I looked at, and was accepted to, similar programs at Fuller and Gordon-Conwell but neither match the unique combination of academic strength, cohort-centric learning, and global focus like this program at Fox. I highly suggest it be given a serious look.

  7. George Fox changed my life. My hybrid D.Min with me living in the UK, helped me explore my ministry context and resource it immensely. So much so that I know lead a D.Min program.

GFU provide vigour and rigour in studies with a huge commitment to the care of students, and attention to real world contexts and ministry locations. Their continued exploration of hybrid learning pedagogy is cutting edge.

  8. So happy to have found George Fox! Fabulous people, amazing programs, flexible, innovative, grounded seminary. I’m in the DMin and it is wonderful. Definitely one of the few seminaries that is taking the real world into account in its planning and development.
